The Great Brighton Pottery Challenge

Calling All Potters!

The Great Brighton Pottery Challenge presented by The Painting Pottery Cafe with Jim Erin, from BBC’s Great Pottery Throwdown, starts in the New Year.

Do you have what it takes to be crowned Brighton’s Best Potter? Show off your throwing and hand building skills and impress Jim and his colleagues. Then let Jim decide.

Firstly fill in the application form and send us an image of your work. Potters from outside Brighton are welcome to apply.

The closing date for applications is 31st December 2016. Successful applicants will take part in a series of challenges at the Painting Pottery Cafe in the North Laine in Brighton.

Elimination round - Sunday 22nd January 2017 – from midday

You will be asked to throw two identical items and hand build a pot, all against the clock.

Jim and colleagues will then select up to 5 potters to go through to the final challenge.

Final Challenge - Sunday 5th March – 10.00am – 4.45pm

Your opportunity to showcase your skills and creativity. You will be asked to throw a set of items and to hand build a vessel. We are looking for beauty with functionality.

Decoration - Sunday 19th March – 10.30am – 5.30pm

Decoration of all of your work using underglazes and finally dip or brush on clear glaze.

Judging and prize giving - Sunday 2nd April – Midday

The Prizes will be a collection of exclusive pieces by Jim Erin, inspired by the iconic Royal Pavilion.

1st Prize – Overall winner

2nd Prize – Runner up

And a special prize for the best single creation

You must be available for all challenge dates. You will need to provide your permission to be involved in any publicity. Finalists work will be given to potters 3 months after the end of the challenge.

All materials will be provided but you are responsible for your own transport and other expenses.
